Breach Into Federal Personnel System Went Undetected For Over A Year

Hostile Actors purportedly from China have successfully breached the computer systems of the Office of Personnel Management — The HR department for the federal government.  Personal data including Social Security Numbers for every federal employee has been stolen according to sources close to the investigation.

Adding salt to the wound is the fact that this attack went undetected for over a year.  That is not a typo.. over a year of free rein on the OPMs network.  The president of American Federation of Government Employees has gone on the record to say that “..hackers are now in possession of all personnel data for every federal employee, every federal retiree, and up to one million former federal employees.”

It is important to clarify that data took by the hostile actors is federal civilian employees such as members of Congress, FBI, or the Secret Service.  This database does not include executive branch employees in military or intelligence services but does include civilians with clearances.
